For component 2 I have decided to respond to the fragmentation theme because I decided that it would be an interesting idea to make images with fragments of glass or pieces of paper because I want to try something new to what I tried with face value and constructed landscapes. I also looked at some of the recommended artists work and i found some really interesting images by David Seidner and Marilyn Henrion. I prefer Seidners images because they are similar to the idea that I have for this theme however I think that the contrast between the black and white buildings with the colourful buildings around the edges makes it almost seem as though someone was watching a television show and the tv began to glitch. I think this abstract work is why she is a successful photographer. However in my images I want to have a shattered mirror or pieces of glass depicting parts of a persons face but it will be really challenging to make it look like the mirror shattered on its own, if this approach doesn't work i want to try to make the images in a photo editor (e.g. photopea, photoshop and pixlr) instead.

Seidner uses reflection and refraction in his images to create pictures that catch the viewers eye and makes them wonder about both his thought process and how he made his images. For example in one of his photos he has taken a portrait through a broken mirror and he has made the face look almost deformed because the mirror is reflecting in different ways due to the cracks. This gives his images a very abstract feeling without being so abstract that you cant tell what is in the image. I think that his images are very impressive as he has tried many different ways of taking pictures to find a way that suits him. Most of his work is in black and white which gives it a very vintage look that makes it seem as though they were taken quite a while ago. His images usually have a lot of contrast due to the mainly monochrome colour scheme which gives the subject a very pale looking skin tone.

Henrior uses many different images of buildings in her work (many of which she edits to make them appear black and white) to make a large collage of the interesting buildings she sees. In her images she usually arranges the colourful buildings either in the middle or around the edges of the monochrome buildings to give the images a very distinct vibrance. The black and white buildings clash with the others which gives the viewer a sense that there is some sort of conflict in the image. This could have been intentional to represent the contrast between emotions, like happiness and sadness, excitement and anger, etc. This image in particular is almost in the shape of a heart which furthers this inference however, I may be completely wrong and she just likes to make images in random shapes that contrast with the other elements within the images.

I decided to take these images with a variety of different subjects because I wanted to figure out what I thought looked the best in order to make the best images I can. I also decided to make them black and white as I wanted to take some inspiration from David Seidners work as I think it has a very interesting and ethereal look to them that I think would work well with some of the pictures I have taken. I haven’t been able to use a broken glass filter on all of the images as it took me a while to make them all black and white and applying the glass effect on the first six was very time consuming.

Fragmentation Experimentation:
I decided to put a black and white effect over these images to make them appear darker and to give them more contrast so that they look like an old photo. I am planning on making these images look like they are in a broken photo frame by putting a broken glass png over the top of the images to make it seem as if the images are in a broken picture frame to give the viewer an idea of how moments in life can be easily forgotten if they aren’t cherished. I want the viewer to take a moment to think about how many precious memories they either haven’t thought about or that they have forgotten. The message behind these images is that, if you spend all your time and energy on the bad memories, you’ll forget about the good memories.
This image is my favourite of all of these experiments because it is foggy but you can still see what is in the image. It was originally a very bright image but i decide to make it black and white, I think that the black and white filter was the better choice for this style of photography as it gives the image a very ethereal feeling that could send shivers down the viewers spine. I think that the framing in this image makes the hill seem really far away and the fog covering it makes it seem like it is fading into nothing.

Artist Research:
This image makes it seem as though the subjects body has been divided and the way that the images are e positioned makes it seem as if she is wandering around aimlessly, without any purpose. I believe that the image gives this impression because the images are all in black and white and the subject is looking in the same direction in each of the pictures, giving the illusion of movement and the fact that the subject is solitary furthers this idea of loneliness and a lack of purpose. The fact that these images were made into a sculpture suggests that the artist thought that her ideas weren’t able to be expressed as a 2d image. This shows that the artists message had to involve movement that looks authentic to regular people.
